Are you planning your move? There are many things to consider when moving house, and you certainly won't be able to keep them all in your head. It makes sense to record the most important points in moving lists so that you don't lose track. Below we provide you with a reliable checklist for your move.
Careful planning and organization are required to ensure that your move is a smooth and pleasant experience. Ideally, this process should begin months before the actual move and accompany you right through to the first few weeks in your new home. Our comprehensive moving checklist will help you to keep an eye on all the important aspects - from early planning to re-registering with authorities such as the residents' registration office and choosing sustainable electricity sources. Use our checklist to master your move step by step and in a structured manner and feel at home in your new home on the day you move in.
Moving checklist: The best preparation counts
To ensure that everything runs smoothly, we recommend that you ideally start planning around 3 months before the planned date. This allows enough time to take care of important details such as the removal company, forwarding orders, visits to the authorities and childcare. A well-thought-out plan ensures that everything goes according to plan on the day of the move. If 3 months is not possible, 6 to 8 weeks is also feasible, while 4 weeks is very reasonable. Early preparation allows for a relaxed moving day.
Checklist: 16 to 10 weeks before the move:
- Give notice on the old apartment and sign the rental agreement for the new apartment
- Find a new tenant if necessary
- If a removal company is required, obtain quotes
- Inform removal helpers about the removal date
- Inform your electricity and gas provider about the move now, they will then automatically re-register you
- Cancel newspaper subscriptions and the like or inform us of your new address.
- Apply for vacation! A few days before the move, on the day of the move itself and a few days to a week afterwards are ideal
- Renovation work begins (old and new apartment)
- Order furniture if necessary
- Apply for and take out a rental deposit
- Get boxes and packaging material
- Organize child and pet care
Checklist: 10 to 5 weeks before the move:

- Packing moving boxes
- Register a no-stopping zone and apply for a parking space with special parking rights if necessary
- Arrange a date for handing over the apartment with the old landlord

- Download and complete the re-registration documents from the city now
- Make copies of all important documents for security (apartment handover protocol, rental agreement, electricity bill, heating bill)
Checklist one week before the move:
- Packing the last moving boxes
- Dismantle unused furniture
- Use up supplies or give them away/pack up dry goods
- On the day of the move itself, everything should go like clockwork thanks to good preparation and the support of your removal helpers. Once you have worked through the moving checklist, moving day itself will be almost child's play
