Take the Internet with you when you move

The good news first: In principle, you can simply take your existing Internet contract with you when you move, as it is not location-specific. Before you move, you should check the availability of your current provider at your new place of residence. If your provider cannot offer the same services there, you have the right to terminate your contract with one month's notice and look for a new provider. If you want to terminate your contract and there are no special reasons for termination, remember to cancel early - preferably three months before you move, or much earlier for annual contracts. There are often better offers for new customers that you can take advantage of.

If your DSL contract is also available at your new place of residence, you can take it with you and the contract term remains unchanged, i.e. it is not extended. However, you will have to pay a relocation fee, which is usually between 30 and 80 euros. However, this is no more expensive than a new connection. The costs therefore vary depending on the provider, but you can expect to pay a reasonable amount and the move will be quick and uncomplicated. If you move within the same city, you can often even take your Internet and telephone with you to your new location for free.

If you also want to take your landline with you, taking your number with you is easy if the area code remains the same. However, if you move to a different area code, at least the area code will change.

Special notice period

If your provider cannot provide the contractually agreed services at your new place of residence, you have the right to special termination. This is the case, for example, if your contract includes fiber optics but this is not connected at your new place of residence. However, the special termination also applies if you move into an apartment where you already have a telecommunications contract. Since December 1, 2021, you have been able to terminate your contract early to move out in such cases.

Procedure

  1. Take care early: Start planning your move in good time.
  2. Inform your provider: Inform your provider and find out whether it is possible to take your contract with you.
  3. Check availability: Check the availability of services at your new place of residence and arrange a switchover date if necessary.
  4. Search for a provider: If the services are not available, compare providers to find the best option for you.

Moving abroad

The above rules can also be applied to a move abroad. However, as local companies usually only operate their own mobile network in Germany, extraordinary termination is increasingly used here - after all, they cannot fulfill the current contract to the same extent abroad. You can then simply choose a suitable provider at your new place of residence.

Moving with different providers

1&1

At 1&1, you must notify the move 30 days in advance so that your Internet connection is already working after the move. The cost of activating a new connection is 69.95 euros. If you extend your tariff or upgrade, the move is free of charge and the one-off connection fee is waived. You can simply report the move online in the 1&1 Control Center, check availability and select the desired date.

Telecom

Telekom recommends a lead time of around 30 days for re-registration. You can simply register your move online in the Customer Center and check availability at your new place of residence quickly and easily on the website.

Vodafone

Vodafone also offers the option of registering the move online. The relocation fee here is 39.99 euros. If you are moving within the EU and have an EU Flex contract , you can continue to surf as usual abroad. It is also easy to hand over your DSL contract to the next tenant using a form. Check availability early on and plan your move at least four weeks in advance to ensure a smooth transition!

o2

At o2, you can also re-register online. If you currently have DSL or cable as your connection technology, you can simply do this via My o2; if you use fiber optics or LTE/5G, you should contact the service team with your request. The relocation costs are usually between 40 and 70 euros. Here, too, it is important to notify us in good time to avoid delays.

Conclusion

Moving house is an exciting time and should be as stress-free as possible. By checking the availability of your internet and telephone providers early on and informing your provider in good time, you can ensure that everything runs smoothly. Make use of the special right of termination if necessary and plan the switchover carefully to avoid unnecessary interruptions. With good preparation and the right steps, you can relax and look forward to your new home and stay connected at all times. Good luck with your move!
